Continuing the conversation from Choices, Changes and Chocolate - the Wellesley parent workshops on building resilience
Please logon and post your thoughts by clicking on a topic and clicking on 'Reply'. ~~~ The recommended books list is posted above within List Container. ~~~ The mindfulness scripts are also posted above to help your child recognize when he or she feels relaxed.~~~ Your first contact regarding your child's mental health is your family. You will want to help your child develop resilience, including mindfulnes (the recognition of feeling relaxed), autonomy (making decisions without undue stress), social skills, communication skills and creative problem solving.

Engage the pediatrician
~~~If your child is healthy, with no symptoms of depression~~~ Engage your pediatrician by discussing whether each visit will include the PSC, the Pediatric Symptom Checklist. You may view information about the PSC at http://psc.partners.org/psc_order.htm Should counseling become of interest, the pediatrician will make referrals for you. Wellesley is equidistant to the best psychology and psychiatric resources in the region with Mclean Hospital and Childrens Hospital Boston. In addition, the Social Work Therapy Referral Service is at (617) 720-2828 and their web link is http://www.therapymatcher.org/find_counselor.htm Call the mental health provider listed on the back of your insurance card and ask how they make referrals for counseling. Review your insurance coverage and consider changing your carrier if mental health coverage is lacking. ~~~If your child has been diagnosed with depression~~~ Introduce your child to the Experience Journal where other kids speak about depression. View online at http://www.experiencejournal.com/depression/index.shtml Arrange for the school nurse and the treatment provider to share medical information with each other. Maintain a treatment team chart of essential information and telephone numbers. This topic is detailed in A Parent's Guide To A Child's Psychiatric Hospitalization which may be viewed and printed from the Parent Resources page of this web site.
School Wellness Policy is not limited to nutrition and exercise and can be expanded to address mental health. Here's how to do it.
In addition to nutrition and physical activities, you may choose to include “other wellness activities”.
